On June 28, 2018, the Toronto City Council adopted the Official Plan and Zoning By-law amendments permitting laneway suites in R zones under Zoning By-law 569-2013 in the Toronto and East York District.

Your property must be within the

area in the map below to qualify. Currently secondary homes are not permitted outside of this area in the GTA.

A laneway suite is a self-contained residential unit located on the same lot as a detached house, semi-detached house or townhouse, and generally located in the rear yard next to a laneway.

Laneway suites are generally smaller in scale and completely detached from the main house on the lot.
